Your progress
Every point here stands for something you did on your own machine: a step checked, a command whose output you pasted. Proofs unlock tips and open-source apps for what comes next.

Unlocked tips
Tips unlock when you prove a step: each proof opens what to do next with your new setup.
Install the NVIDIA driver and check your card
- Keep nvtop open while you experiment: you watch the graphics memory fill as a model loads.
- Write down the total memory shown: it decides the size of model you will be able to run.

Docker with access to your GPU
- Every GPU service you add will reuse these two options: --runtime=nvidia and --gpus all.
- lazydocker gives an overview of your containers in the terminal, logs included.

Your first local model with llama.cpp
- Your server speaks the same protocol as paid APIs: most tools accept a base address, give them http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1.
- Open WebUI puts a chat interface on top of this server, with no external account.

Which local model for which job: a bench that measures real work
- Measure again after every change (quantisation, context, driver): one number says nothing, two numbers tell a story.
- When you want to judge quality and not only speed, lm-evaluation-harness runs standard tests against your model.

Homelab 1: Proxmox, the base under every service
- Take a snapshot of a machine before every major update: rolling back costs one click.
- The Proxmox community scripts install a common service as one LXC container; read them before you run them.

Homelab 2: one HTTPS entrance for all your services
- Every new service now goes through the proxy: one name, one certificate, no extra port opened on the router.
- Uptime Kuma watches your addresses and tells you when one of them goes down.

Homelab 3: your own password manager with Vaultwarden
- Install the Bitwarden browser extension and mobile app, then point them at your server.
- Turn on two-factor authentication on your account before you store anything important in it.

Homelab 5: backups that survive an attack on your server
- A backup only counts once restored: pick a random file every month and bring it back.
- restic adds encryption and deduplication when your copy leaves your home.

Homelab 7: replace Google Photos with Immich
- Turn on automatic backup in the Immich mobile app: your photos leave the phone without you thinking about it.
- Add Immich's folder to the backup from the previous step: photos without a copy are not safe.
